Curriculum

The basic components of our structured environment are as follows:

Freedom: The child is allowed to move freely around the classroom talking to other children, working with any equipment he/she chooses.

Reality and Nature: An experience of the natural environment is given to help the child achieve harmony with nature.

Social Awareness: Through exercises on the care of the environment, care of self and development of social skills, the child is helped towards social awareness.

Order: The carefully planned and structured environment develops in the child a sense of orderliness and an awareness of order in the external world.

Beauty: The environment is aesthetically pleasing and simple, developing a sense of beauty in the child.

Sense Training: This develops the child's awareness, helps build the needed concepts for learning and sounds necessary for appropriate language development.

Each day starts with a circle time of about 20 minutes. The child is given the opportunity and freedom to choose materials spontaneously from the Montessori shelves. The teachers move round the class to supervise the children's work and assist them when necessary.

The five curriculum areas are:

Practical Life Exercises: These include elementary movements and preliminary activities such as classroom conduct, development of fine motor skills - pouring, transferring, sweeping, opening and closing; care of self, care of the environment and exercises for the development of social skills, grace and courtesy.

Sensorial Education: These develop the following senses of the child: chromatic (sense of colours), hearing, sight, smell, touch, taste and the muscular dimension (fine and gross control). Sensorial materials with control of errors help to refine the child's senses.

Mathematics: Here, the child works with mathematics materials such as number rods, sand paper numerals, spindle boxes, golden beads materials and sequence operations. The child uses the concrete apparatus to compute simple addition, subtraction, division and multiplication of numbers.

Language: This includes oral language development, written expression, reading, writing and grammar. Basic skills in writing and reading are developed through the use of sandpaper and large movable alphabet. The child works with pink, blue and green series to develop writing, reading, listening and speaking skills.

Cultural Subjects: Here, the child is introduced to geography, biology, life science, music, art and movement through the use of didactic apparatus. The Montessori concrete materials help the child to develop his/her personality, adapt to his/her culture and become an independent, useful member of the society.

Sense Training: This develops the child's awareness, helps build the needed concepts for learning and sounds necessary for appropriate language development.

Pre-School elective options include art and crafts, cultural activities, indoor games and story time. There is an activity period every Friday where pupils participate in songs, poems, recitations and short plays.

Pre-School pupils participate in outdoor activities, P.E., Music and ICT. In summary, the Montessori Method helps the child to be disciplined, independent, cultured, responsible, creative, imaginative and self confident.

Junior School

Throughout the early years, the aim is to achieve effectiveness in the core skills of reading, oral and written communication and dexterity with numbers. These are of prime importance, without which further progress can be inhibited. In addition, through topics, themes and projects, the pupils are also introduced to the world around them and trained in the understanding of life in its many and varied aspects. Using internationally accepted practice, children are taught to inquire and to use and apply skills learned.

Junior Elementary

During the early years of elementary education, we seek to:

Ensure that pupils receive optimum tuition in order to maximize attainment and enhance their general development.

Emphasize the importance of developing the core skills in Literacy and Numeracy.

Offer further specialist tuition, if needed to pupils experiencing difficulties in achieving satisfactory performance levels.

Provide a stimulating and enjoyable learning environment in which happiness and application flourish side by side.

Advise, guide and train the child to develop appropriate behavioural skills at individual and group levels.

Introduce another modern language (French), offering the challenge of learning a different form of communication.

Offer the right challenges within a well-supervised and caring environment to enhance self-esteem and self confidence.

Senior Elementary

Without losing sight of the initial objectives, the stage extends the challenges offered. The curriculum becomes more specialized, with the addition of new knowledge and skill training as detailed below:

The emphasis on the core skills continues, but increasingly, these skills are used to seek and find information and solve problems.

Specialist help also continues for those who have not yet achieved acceptable levels of skill.

The use of new technologies in Science and Information and Communication Technology and development of practical skills through Art and Craft, initiate the child into the modern world.

The levels of demand in terms of self-discipline and personal organization are raised and responsibilities are increased at both individual and group levels.

Cultural and environmental studies advance knowledge of the world with various projects reinforcing the set learning goals.

A solid foundation is created at this level to ensure a smooth transition into the secondary school.
